Q: The reason why Dahlias have an uncanny ability to cross breed into so many varieties is its genetic makeup. What is it? |
Dahlias are octoploids which have eight sets of homologous chromosomes, 64 chromosomes bearing hereditary factors, whereas most plants have only two sets. This explains the sometimes extremely divergent results obtained from crossing them. |
