Course description: The Dahlia became the official
flower of San Francisco, by decree of Mayor Rolph, in 1926! This
flower a fitting symbol of our city, as it has its roots in Mexico
and traveled with the Spanish Empire.
Dahlias thrive in the cool foggy summers of our city and have a
dizzying range of colors, forms, and sizes. This program is planned
to coincide with the peak of the dahlia season, when the Dahlia
Society of California holds its annual competition at the County
Fair Bldg. next to SF Botanical Garden.
The session will begin with a talk about dahlia history and growing
tips, which will be followed by a pleasant stroll to the Dahlia Dell
of Golden Gate Park, located next to the Conservatory of Flowers on
JFK drive. There you will be able to view 400 plants in full bloom,
and further discussions will take place. The highlight of the day
will be a walk through the dahlia competition, with tips on what it
takes to win a blue ribbon.
Dahlia literature will be available, along with a chance to sign up
for the 2006 Tuber Sale!
